What Is a Merchandising
Business?
A merchandising
business, sometimes called merchandisers,
is one of the most common types of businesses we interact with daily. It is a
business that purchases finished products and resells them to consumers. Think
of the last time you went shopping for food, household items, or personal
supplies. You were likely in a merchandising business. That store had purchased
the items wholesale from a distributor or a manufacturer and made it available
to you. While the store may have been required to purchase in large quantities,
they offer the product to you in a small, personal-use size.
For
instance, a wholesaler may offer deodorant to a merchandising business at a
large discount, but they will likely require the store to purchase hundreds,
even thousands, of units to qualify for a discount. The store then offers the
deodorant to you at the retail price and allows you to purchase one container.
The difference in the amount you paid the store and the store paid the
wholesaler is the store's profit. The profit allows the store to stay in
business and offer you products in the future.
Companies
who provide services are not considered merchandising businesses, unless they
offer merchandise as part of their service. For instance, if you go to a
tanning salon, the tanning session is considered a service. However, if the
salon offers tanning lotions, creams, and tanning enhancers, it could be
considered a merchandising business because it has products available for you
to purchase.

Free Samples
Delivering free samples is a highly
effective merchandising method. It allows users to try out the product before
they purchase. Free food samples in grocery store aisles often lure buyers into
purchasing the full-sized product. Freeware and shareware software demonstrate
some of a product's functionality, enticing users to purchase the full
versions. Many early video games, such as "Doom" and
"Wolfenstein 3D," allowed players to try out early levels before
purchasing the full game.
Logo Items
Items decorated with a colorful
logo are small but memorable ways for a company to make an impression on
potential customers. Many firms offer T-shirts, pens and key chains emblazoned
with the company logo as a major facet of their branding strategy. These
merchandising efforts give consumers a concrete reminder of the firm's identity
every time they use the item. The items are often inexpensive, especially when
purchased in bulk, and can make a more memorable impression than business cards
or brochures.
Cross-Merchandising
The cross-merchandising method
works when complementary items are placed in close proximity to one another.
Retail outlets employ cross-merchandising: battery packs are placed next to
small electronic items; tomato sauces sit on shelves near pasta boxes; memory
cards hang on pegs near digital cameras. Cross-merchandising can be just as
effective in an online store. When a user searches for an item at an online retail
site, the site also can display complementary items in the search results.
Limited-Time Offers
Customers love getting a deal. When
they realize the deal has a time limit, they will do what they can to take
advantage of that deal within that time window. Sites such as Group on and
Daily Deals offer small business owners the opportunity to present limited-time
offers to both new and existing customers. These offers bring in people who
want to capitalize on the deal and, after experiencing what the company have to
offer, may become repeat customers.

VII. History
The advent of one-stop shopping
convenience began in 1998 when PUREGOLD opened its first branch along Shaw Blvd. in Mandaluyong City. The store offered a wide array of goods from
groceries, apparel, household accessories and furniture at very affordable
prices. During that time, the one-stop shopping philosophy was still a novel
idea to consumers but with the excellent
service and quality products it provided, it did not take long for Puregold to
make its mark in the retail industry.
Today, it has grown into a giant retail chain with more than 225 stores
nationwide.

PUREGOLD’S
STRATEGY
A review of one of the Nation’s
ingenious business tactics.
Being one of the country’s biggest
supermarket chains, Puregold certainly knows how to take advantage of the
market. As what I’ve read in “The PHILIPPINE STAR” business section, B-12,
dated May 10 2012, the company is using the common sari-sari store as a leverage.
800,000 is the estimated number of sari-sari stores present in the country,
creating the lion’s share in the country’s retail industry. As I see it, this
is one of the best strategy there is, creating an alliance with the small
players instead of trying to eliminate them. Here in Legazpi City, small
sari-sari store owners are fuming by the entry of the LCC & JY chains of
convenient stores. They see it as a grave threat to their financial existence,
as this convenient stores offer a wide array of cheaper products. Local
consumers would rather purchase their groceries and supplies in these
convenient stores instead of the sari-sari ones. This kind of business strategy
is financially worth doing but morally unstable as this creates bad impressions
from most small-medium retail entrepreneurs. It’s a double edged sword; it
signifies a growth in the local economy but creates tension in the local retail
society.
Going back to the topic at hand,
Puregold’s strategy of aligning itself with the sari-sari store owners,
establishes a strong financial certainty. It already has a program called
“Aling Puring”, with this, sari-sari store owners have access to Puregold’s
huge product inventory-most probably at a discount. Now, with this, small
entrepreneurs would source their goods in Puregold, eliminating in one way or
another, Puregold’s competition.
Although this strategy may apply to
most areas and in some others it may not (of course due to the geographical
location), it still creates a great leverage as a whole.
This strategy creates the, as I
call it, “Spring of Wealth”… where revenue keeps flowing, just like water on a
spring. I have to hand it to them; their marketing department sure knows how to
do their work!

Things To Know About Puregold’s Online Grocery Shopping Service
Puregold Price Club Inc. (PSE:
PGOLD) has officially joined the online retail world, with its new grocery
shopping website. The company’s digital venture aims to give customers the
ability to shop for grocery items without having to leave the comfort of their
homes. Check out the five things to know about Puregold’s online grocery
shopping service.
1. Tindahan ni Aling Puring (TNAP)
members will get to use it first.
According to Puregold president
Vincent Co, the company’s online shopping service www.puregold.com.ph, will
initially be available to TNAP members, majority of which are owners of
sari-sari stores.
“We want to have a niche market
first before we go full blast,” The Philippine Star reported Co as saying on
Wednesday during the annual sari-sari store convention of Puregold. “Customers
now are very demanding.”
He said that it’s better to start
with a select group of customers so that they can get feedback. They want to
make sure that they offer something different from other online retailers, if
they decide to go full steam ahead with e-commerce.
Co explained that the reason why
they chose to offer the online shopping service for sari-sari store owners
first is because these people are the ones who cannot just leave their houses
at the drop of a hat.
“Should they leave, they have to
close their stores and that means less sales for them,” he added.
Antonio de los Santos, Puregold’s
vice president for operations, said that the e-commerce service for TNAP
members will start within the third quarter (July-September) of 2016.
2. Puregold’s online grocery
shopping will eventually be available for all its consumers.
De los Santos said the company will
cater to all of its consumers within 2016.
3. It will also have a mobile
application for Android and iOS users.
Aside from using their computers to
shop online, consumers can also use their mobile phones to buy stuff from
Puregold.
Co said that the app can be used
for discounts and promos in the store. Consumers can also use it to locate
stores and transfer money. It is already available for Android users. However,
iOs users shouldn’t worry because it will also be offered by June or July on
the Apple store.
4.
There is no minimum order value to shop at Puregold’s online store.
According to the site’s Frequently
Asked Questions (FAQ) page, customers don’t need to buy in bulk to meet a
minimum order requirement, unlike other online shops. Plus, those who order
products that are worth more than P3,000 will not be charged for delivery
anymore. A flat delivery fee of P80 will be charged for orders P3,000 and
below. The Puregold online grocery accepts debit card, credit card and GCASH. Shoppers
can also opt to pay through cash on delivery.
5.
Puregold will deliver orders the next day.
Consumers must be prepared to wait
for their orders though because these will be delivered the day after the order
is placed online. The online store will
initially serve the areas of Manila, Makati, Taguig, Mandaluyong, San Juan,
Pasig and Quezon City. More cities will be added in the future.
In-Store Pick-up is also available
in these branches:
Puregold Makati
Puregold Commonwealth
Puregold Taguig
Puregold Shaw
Aside from its digital presence,
Puregold also targets to add 25 stores in 2016. So far, six stores have already
been opened. The company currently has 255 stores.
